Gov. Barbour Blasts RNC Resolution That Calls Democrats 'Socialists'

Two days after members of the Republican National Committee began talking up a resolution to always refer to Democrats at the “Socialist Democrats” in public statements, their former national chairman blasted the controversial proposal that is being discussed at the GOP state chairmen’s meeting.

“It doesn’t do any good to call people names,” Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said at the Christian Science Monitor breakfast here in Washington this morning. Barbour, who served as Republican National Chairman from 1993-97, oversaw his party’s historic capture of both Houses of Congress in the ’94 midterm elections.

Would he have killed the proposed to brand Democrats “Socialists” if here were RNC chairman today, I asked. Barbour replied: “If I were chairman, it wouldn’t get out of committee.”
