Ted Cruz introduces 'stop amnesty' bill

No one with any common sense trusts Barack Obama to resist the temptation to scribble out some more executive orders granting amnesty to illegal immigrants.  If anything, he’ll be inclined to go bigger than ever, since his manufactured border crisis has made the likelihood of a congressional deal on amnesty pretty slim.

No one with any common sense wants to see the titanic wave of “refugees” that would come surging across the border if President Obama hands out more amnesty packages, either.  Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has accordingly introduced a bill that would “prevent the Obama Administration from using any taxpayer funds to expand DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and from continuing to lawlessly grant amnesty and work permits to new immigrants who enter the country illegally,” as a statement from his office put it.

Cruz is acutely aware of the humanitarian crisis on the border, which involves thousands of unaccompanied children, but he recognized the importance of halting the human wave as our first priority, in remarks accompanying the introduction of his bill:

???We all recognize the terrible humanitarian crisis that is occurring at the border, and all of us should come together to end the policies that have caused it,??? said Sen. Cruz. ???Tens of thousands of children are being smuggled into the United States by dangerous drug cartels and transnational gangs; it is heartless to allow that to continue.”
He added, ???The staggering conditions that children are being subjected to are a direct result of the amnesty that President Obama illegally and unilaterally enacted in 2012, which caused the number of unaccompanied minors to skyrocket. The only way to stop the border crisis is to stop President Obama???s amnesty. If we do not put an end to its expansion ??? to the promise of amnesty that is the reason so many are coming ??? then more little boys and girls will be trafficked, abused, and even killed. We have an obligation to make sure that not one more child is hurt by this president???s lawlessness.???
Going forward, Sen. Cruz will urge three legislative reforms to stem the flow of illegal immigration, reunite immigrants who arrived here illegally with family in their home nations, and protect the southern border.

Among the further legislative remedies Cruz plans to offer is removal of “the current legal obstacles to humanely and expeditiously reuniting those minors with their families back home” – i.e. no more three-year-long “deportation hearings” that don’t actually deport anyone – and authorization for state governors to put National Guard units on the borders.

Naturally, Cruz’s proposals don’t sit well with those who caused this disaster, and can’t wait to reap the political benefits from it.  The Hill quotes the increasingly erratic Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), thundering: “What the junior senator from Texas said is, we???re not going to do this unless we deport all these children who came here before, the so-called ‘Dreamers.’ Once again we see there are no substantive solutions being offered by the Republican Party.”

The “substantive solution” involves sending the “dreamers” home, exactly as Barack Obama promised to do, and told the people of Central America he would do.  Here, let me refresh Senator Reids’ memory:

“Our message is absolutely don’t send your children unaccompanied on trains or through a bunch of smugglers.  That is our direct message to the families of Central America: Do not send your children to the borders.  If they do make it, they’ll get sent back.  More importantly, they might not make it.” – Barack Hussein Obama, on ABC’s Good Morning America, June 27, 2014.

Nothing else will stop the invasion; people will keep coming as long as they have a reasonable expectation that they will be able to stay.  At the moment, such expectations are quite reasonable.  At worst, it’s a gamble with excellent odds of success.  Every signal sent by the Administration, the Democrat Party, and the amnesty caucus of the Republican Party is an invitation.  Step One in resolving the crisis is to take clear action that will rescind that invitation.  And until such action is taken, young people will be abused, and killed, on the journey north they never should have made.  The people who caused this disaster, and seek to perpetuate it, have no standing to speak of “humanitarianism.”  They have blood on their hands.

Cruz’s plan for expedited hearings and repatriation would cost a tiny fraction of the absurd $3.7 billion bill Barack Obama dropped in our laps for dealing with the crisis.  That wild spending spree – itself just a downpayment on billions more to come – is the unserious, unsubstantive non-solution.  By the way, how many “Dreamers” can we put Senator Reid down for hosting at his houses, instead of billing the U.S. taxpayer?  I’ll bet he’s got room to accommodate dozens of them.

You can bet the United States will handle repatriation in a safe and humane manner, unlike many other countries around the globe.  But we must handle it, for the sake of our own rule of law, and the safety of those who are being sent here.  The American people did not vote for this invasion, and would not have voted for it, if asked honestly.  They almost certainly would have gone along with requests for humanitarian assistance, but not the effective erasure of the southern border.  Knowing that this is not what the American people want, anyone who can honestly call him or herself a “representative” is honor-bound to take effective action to reverse it.

Update: Senator Cruz journeyed to the border to participate in Glenn Beck’s charity relief effort, unsurprisingly drawing little attention from a media establishment already trying to beat down Republican candidates who look dangerous in the 2016 election.  On last Friday’s installment of his radio show, Beck goaded the media for under-reporting Cruz’s involvement:

???Why is nobody covering this???? Beck asked on his radio program Friday. ???This came out yesterday. This is a big deal. Why is no one covering that Ted Cruz is going down to the border for a relief program????

Beck said Cruz???s involvement is scarcely being mentioned because the left has to paint the senator as a ???hater,??? and some on the right don???t want to help a conservative that is not part of the Republican ???establishment.???

???They cannot cover Ted Cruz going down to the border,??? Beck said. ???This gives Ted Cruz the ammo to be tough on immigration, to be tough on justice. Once you have mercy established, you have credibility to talk about justice.???

???If [former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush] were going down, I guarantee you Fox News would be covering it,??? Beck added. ???NBC would have cameras there.???

???It???s amazing,??? Beck said. ???And the lack of coverage should tell you everything you need to know: We are already playing presidential games. We???re already playing presidential games. Can???t we not play games????

I think the other reason the media is reluctant to give this big-time coverage is that it makes their beloved Democrats look bad – why aren’t they helping take care of President Obama’s invited guests?  For that matter, why is private charity necessary at all?  Our $3.5 trillion government can’t deal with this unless we give it even more money?  Also, the media doesn’t want its viewers reflecting that Cruz’s efforts to thwart Obama’s amnesty plans are every bit as much a humanitarian effort as his going down to the border to help distribute food and water.  This disaster has to stop, and if Obama writes another few executive orders, what we’re seeing now will be just a warm-up act for the main event.
